Alcaraz Dominates Lehecka to Reach US Open Semifinals
It took only seven minutes for Carlos Alcaraz to realize this was another one of those days when he could dictate every shot. Leading in his first service game, the Spaniard moved well behind the baseline, stepped around the ball, and unleashed a risky forehand that sailed past his opponent for a winner.
That would not be the last time the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd was stunned by Alcaraz’s brilliance as he played with composure and precision, securing a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jiri Lehecka to advance to the semifinals.
This tournament has highlighted Alcaraz’s effortless form. Reaching the finals in his last seven events, with 59 match wins and six titles this season, the 22-year-old is in the most consistent stretch of his career. Over the past ten days, he has played with complete freedom, reaching a Grand Slam semifinal without dropping a set for the first time.
Still, Alcaraz knew Lehecka presented his toughest challenge yet. The 23-year-old Czech has long been on the verge of a breakthrough, armed with a dominant first serve and a punishing forehand. In February, he defeated Alcaraz in three sets at the Qatar Open.
This time, Alcaraz set the tone early by breaking Lehecka’s serve in the first game. For nearly two hours, he maintained relentless pressure, delivering strong serves and showcasing a varied attack that contrasted sharply with Lehecka’s more predictable play. His defensive skill made the court feel suffocating for his opponent.
After two commanding sets—marked by early breaks and Alcaraz’s control—the third set tested his maturity. Lehecka raised his level, holding serve and applying pressure.
In the past, Alcaraz might have struggled mentally, battling both his opponent and himself. But this time, when Lehecka faltered, Alcaraz seized the moment. At 4-4, rather than chasing flashy winners, he tightened his game, delivering deep returns and avoiding mistakes. A spectacular defensive play sealed the break, and he roared in celebration.
Even for Alcaraz, who has accumulated major titles faster than any of his peers, his efficiency lately has been notable. Known for occasional lapses, his next career step has been developing consistency to conserve energy for tougher matches. As he closes in on a possible sixth Grand Slam title, his growth is undeniable.
