Federal police officials reported that a criminal organization potentially connected to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro attempted to illicitly acquire and sell luxury items gifted by foreign dignitaries, with an estimated value exceeding $1.2 million.
The allegations emerged three days following the government's accusation against the ex-leader for embezzlement, money laundering, and engaging in criminal activities, potentially leading to a 25-year imprisonment if convicted.
Referred by Brazilian media as "O Caso das Joias," or Jewellery-gate, the Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes allowed the publication of an extensive federal investigation into this alleged network that was uncovered following Bolsonaro's departure from office after his 2022 electoral loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The investigation details suggest that the criminal group, which appeared during international trips by government representatives acting under Bolsonaro's name, would have sold these stolen luxury items overseas, funneling their proceeds into Bolsonaro's personal wealth through intermediaries and circumventing conventional banking systems to conceal the transaction's origin.
Among the alleged embezzled goods were an expensive Chopard pen worth $20,000, a pair of earrings valued over $126,000, and a Rolex watch priced at nearly $74,000. The report suggested these assets might have financed Bolsonaro's activities during his time in the United States following the end of his presidency on December 30, 2022.
Jair Bolsonaro has yet to respond publicly to these allegations but previously denied any wrongdoing while serving as president. Despite being asked to address the accusations at a recent right-leaning conference in Brazil, he refrained from giving full responses or directly acknowledging claims related to other incidents during his presidency, such as involvement in January 2023's rebellion in Brasilia.
Investigators maintain that there is compelling evidence indicating Bolsonaro had knowledge of and benefited from the purported criminal enterprise known as Jewellery-gate.
