Luka Modrić, Real Madrid’s captain, will move to Milan following the Club World Cup, as confirmed by the Serie A club’s coach, Massimiliano Allegri, on Monday.
The 39-year-old midfielder revealed in May that he would depart Madrid after the competition. Madrid will play Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals on Wednesday, with the final set for Sunday.
"Modrić will arrive in August," Allegri said during his first press conference as Milan's coach. "He is an exceptional player."
Modrić, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, will join a Milan team aiming to recover from an eighth-place finish, which left them without European football. Allegri, returning for his second stint at Milan after taking over from the dismissed Sérgio Conceição in late May, mentioned further adjustments to the squad.
Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders was transferred to Manchester City in June, and French defender Théo Hernandez may move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. "Although Reijnders and Hernandez won’t continue with us next season, goalkeeper Mike Maignan and attacker Rafael Leão appear likely to remain," Allegri stated.
Allegri, who previously led Milan to a Serie A title in 2010-11, was most recently in charge of Juventus.
