As she celebrated her 70th birthday today, Angela Merkel was not surrounded by an assembly of dignitaries. Instead, her day passed quietly in private with no grand celebration planned for September at her political party's headquarters; rather, there would be a lecture on the Enlightenment theme held within Berlin’s Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
Unlike some former leaders who have taken roles such as United Nations leadership or turned to lobbying, Merkel has devoted herself to the arts since her retirement from politics in 2021.
A year prior to this, she met with Alexander Osang at a theatre performance, discussing not political matters but literature and everyday life observations. This reflected her post-political endeavors: immersed in Shakespeare's Macbeth and Schiller's Don Carlos, Merkel remained focused on literary pursuits rather than public affairs.
In May that year, she honored an actor friend at a foundation event unrelated to politics; it was more of a personal commemoration than political recognition. Merkel has been noted for her preference for unity over differing opinions in recent years, which will become apparent when considering the content of her upcoming memoirs set to release in November.
Until then, she continues to partake in cultural spheres and fictional appearances within novels and television series while distancing herself from political discourse.
