Arsenal Secure Viktor Gyökeres in Key Signing for £55m
Arsenal have addressed their need for a forward by finalizing the acquisition of Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting in a deal worth an initial £55m.
The 27-year-old Swedish international, instrumental in Sporting’s league triumph last season with 39 goals and a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract with the club.
The total cost of the transfer could rise to £64m with performance-based incentives, bringing Arsenal’s total spending this off-season to around £200m.
Gyökeres is the sixth addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer, joining defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), midfielder Christian Nørgaard (£10m), and forward Noni Madueke (£48.5m).
The club officially announced the signing with a short message on X, stating: “This is where you need to be. Viktor Gyökeres is a Gunner.”
Gyökeres is expected to link up with his new teammates during Arsenal’s pre-season tour in Singapore and Hong Kong. The Gunners will play Newcastle at the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday before concluding their tour against Tottenham in Hong Kong on 31 July.
Arteta praised the striker’s abilities, saying: “Viktor brings a lot to the team. He is a fast and strong presence in attack, with an outstanding scoring record at both club and international level. His sharp finishing and movement in the box make him a constant danger to opponents. We’re eager to integrate him into the squad and begin working together.”
Gyökeres began his career with Brommapojkarna in Sweden before joining Brighton in 2018. He had loan spells at St Pauli, Swansea, and Coventry before making a permanent move to the latter in 2021. After Coventry narrowly missed promotion in the 2023 Championship playoff final, he transferred to Sporting for £20.5m, where he netted 97 times in 102 appearances.
Arsenal faced a shortage of established strikers late last season due to injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. Even before then, the team lacked a consistent goal-scorer. Arteta will be hoping Gyökeres can help deliver his first trophy since the 2020 FA Cup and end the club’s 20-year wait for a Premier League title.
