Bayern Munich have stated that Jamal Musiala is expected to be sidelined for an extended period due to a leg fracture suffered during a collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the Club World Cup.
The club confirmed on Sunday that Musiala returned to Munich from Florida for surgery after sustaining the injury in Saturday’s quarter-final defeat to PSG.
Medical examinations revealed Musiala suffered a fibula fracture along with an ankle dislocation. Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, commented: “This severe injury and the long recovery period are a huge blow for Jamal and everyone involved.”
“This is a major setback for FC Bayern. Jamal is a key player for us, both on the field and within the team. The personal toll is significant, and we all stand by him. After just returning from a previous injury, he now faces another prolonged absence. He will receive our full support throughout his recovery, and we eagerly await his return.”
Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer strongly criticized Donnarumma’s challenge after the match. “It was reckless—there was no need for such a tackle. He risked injuring his opponent,” Neuer said. “Fairness matters, and I would have acted differently.”
Bayern’s head coach, Vincent Kompany, expressed frustration over the incident. “A player like Jamal thrives on the game, and after overcoming previous setbacks, this happens,” he said. “It’s hard to accept.”
Donnarumma later posted on social media: “My thoughts and best wishes are with you, Jamal.” PSG manager Luis Enrique stated: “It was unfortunate—Gigi fell on him accidentally. There was no malice involved.”
