A New Reality Competition Tests Contestants’ Wits in Unknown Locations
CuriosityNews— Imagine The Traitors on wheels, or Race Across the Worldwithout any visual cues. That’s the concept behind the new competition series Destination X.
The setup is straightforward. Thirteen participants meet at Baden-Baden airport in Germany, then travel by helicopter and a specially designed bus with darkened windows to undisclosed European locations—one per episode. Along the way, they complete tasks to gather clues about their whereabouts. At the end of each episode, they enter a "map room" and mark an X where they believe they are. The least accurate guess each time leaves the competition. The final winner takes home £100,000.
The American version is hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, known for his intense role in The Walking Dead, which might unnerve some viewers. The British edition, however, opts for a lighter approach, with Rob Brydon leading the show. “I’m actually Anton Du Beke,” he jokes, referencing the well-known presenter.
The contestants are carefully selected. Among them is James, 23, who admits he’s not a seasoned traveler, having only vacationed once without his parents. Deborah, a crime writer, struggles with the moral implications of even minor deception for the sake of the game. On the other end are highly competitive players like Nick, a record-breaking marathon runner, and Ben, a surf instructor who masks his determination behind a friendly demeanor.
At one point, Ben suggests a rule that everyone on the bus must sit while using the small restroom. As a father of four, he knows the value of practicality.
As with many shows of this kind, not everyone makes it far. Three of the initial group fail the first task and don’t leave the starting point. The remaining ten endure a bewildering 125-mile helicopter trip. Judith, a nuclear engineer, observes that they’re flying backward with the sun to their right—likely heading south. Dawn believes her preparation with her child’s atlas might give her an advantage.
Naturally, the challenges are designed to encourage rivalry, sometimes forcing temporary alliances among the players.
