Ben Stokes commended Shoaib Bashir for his remarkable performance as he became the youngest English player ever to achieve a Test fifty on home ground. The captain noted that at just 20 years old, West Indies were pushed down to 143 runs and eventually lost by 241 runs in the second Test match.
"The wicket offered minimal support for spinners throughout this entire Test match," Stokes explained. "I didn't think it would today."
"He demonstrated his versatility, changing pace, spinning backward and forward – showcasing a wide range of skills in one performance. Bashir possesses immense talent with an impressive ceiling, coupled with unwavering determination to improve and learn. Even when faced with setbacks, he maintains his composure."
This marked the 15th first-class match for Bashir, who was selected for this winter's tour of India – a decision that some considered premature. However, Stokes maintained that their selection process is based on confidence in young players and providing them with support to help accelerate their development.
"Bashir demonstrated his abilities during the trip to India under favorable conditions," Stokes remarked. "But taking seven wickets on this pitch was no surprise."
Having spent a significant amount of time strategizing, West Indies eventually succumbed in one fell swoop. Kraigg Brathwaite, their captain, acknowledged the team's disappointment but emphasized the importance of learning from their performance. Despite the loss, they still have five Test matches left to play this season and are committed to growth through these experiences.
