Brown bear named Boki received a pioneering brain operation in the UK due to hydrocephalus diagnosed through an MRI scan—a condition involving fluid accumulation within his skull causing seizures and other health issues.
Yesterday marked this unique intervention for our two-year old friend, carried out by specialist wildlife veterinary surgeon Romain Pizzi at Wildwood Trust's facility near Canterbury in Kent—the first of its kind conducted here. Boki is now resting comfortably after the surgery and continues to show positive signs amidst his recovery process under close supervision from our team, including Elliott Simpson-Brown (IZVG).
Following yesterday's operation where fluid was drained off in an attempt to alleviate Boki’s condition, he is alert today with medication and a clear spirit. Despite his initial discomfort being common after such procedures—both patients often exhibit signs of distress due to the unfamiliar environment or post-operative effects —our bear's mental activity suggests promising progress thus far according to Romain Pizzi, our exceptional veterinary surgeon who has previously performed similar operations on black bears in Asia.
The Wildwood Trust acknowledges that although we are gratified with Boki’s response so far and continue monitoring his condition closely for further signs of improvement or any potential issues arising from the operation itself—it's early days yet when dealing with such a delicate case involving large mammals like him.
The trust is actively raising funds to cover immediate costs related both pre-operative preparation and necessary ongoing care following this groundbreaking surgery, aiming for an approximate sum of £20,000—a gesture we humbly ask our readers' generosity towards supporting.
