Can New Opposition Leader Put an End to 25 Years of Chavista Rule in Venezuela?

The road from Caracas to Guatire is lined with advertisements praising President Nicolás Maduro and painting his political opponents as villains associated with Venezuela's most notorious criminal group. "They won't defeat us," the slogan declares.

However, amidst the upcoming presidential election on 28 July, some citizens remain unconvinced due to economic instability and corruption under Maduro's rule. Opposition supporters chant "Yes we can!" during a gathering in eastern Caracas, with María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia as their prominent leaders against the current administration.

Machado emerged as one of the few well-known opposition figures after her first choice for stand-in candidate was barred from running. With support from Machado, González faces potential election manipulation tactics that could include disqualification and voter intimidation.
