A Russian national with ties in France has been apprehended on suspicions of conspiring with a foreign power to orchestrate significant disruptions during the Paris Olympics.
The 40-year-old man was taken into custody following an investigation conducted at his residence in central Paris last Sunday, where it is alleged that documents linked to Russia's special forces were discovered. A formal inquiry has been launched concerning potential cooperation with a foreign government aiming to provoke conflict within France – offense carrying severe penalties up to 30 years of imprisonment.
The unidentified suspect, arrested on the day charges were leveled and detained for pre-trial custody, resides in Paris and has previously worked as a private chef, having appeared on Russian cooking shows. His arrival in France dates back to 2010 after stints at notable establishments including a Michelin starred restaurant in Courchevel.
The French media outlet Le Monde reported that the man had expressed his intentions of disrupting the Paris Olympics through intercepted communications, although specific details regarding the alleged plot remain undisclosed. The investigation further unearthed evidence suggesting an attempted connection with Russian intelligence services in 2012 and monitoring activities by French security agencies.
The raid took place at his residence on Rue Saint-Denis along the Seine, where authorities found items of interest potentially linked to diplomatic affairs during Sunday's operation conducted by France's internal security force known as the BRI. Meanwhile, Microsoft had previously disclosed concerns about potential cyberattacks and misinformation attempts targeting the Olympics from Russian sources.
