Chinese businessman, once considered among China's wealthiest individuals, Miles Kwok, now known as Guo Wengui, was convicted on Tuesday by a US jury for engaging in widespread fraud over multiple years. The alleged scheme spanned from 2018 to 2023, defrauding thousands who invested based on false promises of financial security and luxury living.
Kwok was apprehended in New York City back in March 2023 after being accused of running a racketeering scheme involving various businesses he owned or controlled. Over the course of seven weeks, during his trial, it became evident that he deceived investors through fraudulent investments meant to sustain an extravagant lifestyle.
The conviction resulted in guilty verdicts for nine out of 12 criminal charges presented against him, including racketeering conspiracy. Despite the prosecution's claims, Kwok's legal defense argued that no concrete evidence had been shown to prove any investor was defrauded by his actions.
Originally hailing from China during a period of intense anti-corruption efforts in 2014 which also targeted individuals close to the Communist Party, Kwok later sought political asylum in the United States. Upon arrival, he relocated to an upscale New York City residence and became a member of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago club before establishing connections with influential figures such as Steve Bannon.
Kwok’s media enterprise, GTV Media Group Inc., along with his Himalaya Farm Alliance and the Himalaya Exchange, were allegedly involved in attracting hundreds of thousands to invest over $1 billion under Kwok's guidance—an assertion made by prosecutors. Assistant US Attorney Ryan Finkel concluded the trial by stating that Kwok had misled his followers through a series of broadcasts and videos promising secure returns on their investments, assuring them: "I’m rich. I'll take care of you."
