Chris Woakes is likely to miss the upcoming Ashes tour this winter and may require surgery after sustaining a shoulder injury that has ended his involvement in the fifth Test against India.
Woakes, 36, dislocated his left shoulder while attempting to stop a boundary on the first day at The Oval, falling over the rope and injuring the joint in the process. Scans have been conducted, with further assessments expected in the coming days, but initial indications suggest a lengthy recovery.
England have not officially confirmed the full extent of the injury due to the ongoing match, but it is believed an operation will be needed, potentially sidelining him for months. The team is set to arrive in Perth on 9 November for the Australia tour.
Given Woakes’ mixed record abroad—averaging 52 with the ball in this high-scoring series—his selection had been uncertain. However, his experience in a relatively inexperienced seam attack had made him a probable inclusion, especially with Australian pitches recently favoring bowlers and a day-night Test in Brisbane offering strategic possibilities.
The injury has been a significant blow to the England squad, already missing captain Ben Stokes for the series decider due to his own shoulder concerns. Woakes, a two-time World Cup winner and standout performer in the 2023 Ashes, is highly regarded within the team for his professionalism and leadership.
While this was an unusual incident, it aligned with England’s aggressive approach to fielding, introduced under coach Brendon McCullum. Similar injuries have occurred, such as Jack Leach’s concussion during the 2022 season, which allowed for a replacement player.
Fatigue may have played a role, as Woakes was the only England bowler to feature in all five Tests—mirroring India’s Mohammed Siraj—and the first four matches heavily favored batting. His 181 overs in the series marked his heaviest workload in any contest.
With Woakes’ central contract expiring in October and his recent focus on red-ball cricket, there are concerns this setback could affect his international future. The next few weeks, including the development of a recovery plan, will be crucial.
In terms of replacements, Sam Cook—who has been seen as Woakes’ backup with the new ball this season—could benefit from the vacancy. Ollie Robinson’s skills might also make him a candidate, but his last England appearance was during the 2024 India tour before disagreements over his commitment led to his exclusion.
