Britain Re-establishes Diplomatic Ties with Syria
Britain has moved to restore diplomatic relations with Syria following the country’s prolonged civil war, as announced by Foreign Secretary David Lammy during a visit to Damascus.
“There is renewed hope for the Syrian people,” Lammy stated. “Supporting the new government aligns with our shared interest in ensuring stability, security, and prosperity for all Syrians.”
Lammy’s trip marks the first visit by a British minister in 14 years. Alongside the diplomatic renewal, Britain has pledged £94.5 million in aid for urgent humanitarian needs and long-term recovery efforts, including assistance to neighboring countries hosting Syrian refugees.
The shift in Western policy toward Syria comes after insurgent forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, removed Bashar al-Assad from power in December, ending a conflict that lasted over 13 years.
Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order lifting U.S. sanctions on Syria, easing its reconnection to the global financial system and aiding post-war reconstruction.
Britain similarly relaxed certain sanctions in April, unfreezing assets belonging to Syria’s central bank and 23 other entities, such as banks and oil firms, to promote investment. However, restrictions on former regime members remain in place.
After talks with Syrian officials, including Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani and President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Lammy emphasized that a stable Syria would mitigate risks such as irregular migration, the elimination of chemical weapons, and counterterrorism efforts.
Lammy reiterated Britain’s support for an inclusive political transition in Syria and pledged continued assistance.
Before returning, Lammy is scheduled to visit Kuwait, where regional security and bilateral cooperation will be key discussion points. He is also expected to unveil a new collaboration with Kuwait to address Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.
