Denmark Calls for Urgent Meeting with U.S. Over Alleged Influence Efforts in Greenland
Denmark has called in the U.S. charge d’affaires for an urgent discussion following reports of alleged attempts to shape public opinion and policy in Greenland.
The move comes after Danish media, with confirmation from the foreign ministry, reported that at least three American men connected to Donald Trump and his administration are accused of trying to integrate into Greenland’s society for undisclosed purposes.
According to broadcaster DR, their activities include compiling lists of Greenlanders who support Trump. Danish authorities are closely monitoring the situation, as they are aware of foreign actors attempting to sway public sentiment in Greenland.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen condemned the alleged efforts on Wednesday, calling them “completely unacceptable.”
“We need to understand what is happening so that both Denmark and Greenland know what we are dealing with,” he said.
Rasmussen added that officials would emphasize to the U.S. that any foreign-backed campaign in Greenland would violate international norms.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also expressed serious concern, stating, “Interference in the affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland’s democracy, is unacceptable.”
“The U.S. has not clearly denied the reports from DR, which is concerning,” she noted.
Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland since taking office, leading to heightened tensions between Denmark and the U.S. While Greenland is an autonomous territory, Denmark manages its foreign and defense policies.
In a rare gesture underscoring the seriousness of the matter, Denmark’s top civil servant will attend the meeting.
The charge d’affaires was summoned in place of Trump’s designated ambassador, Ken Howery, whose Senate confirmation is still pending. Howery, a PayPal co-founder with ties to Elon Musk and former ambassador to Sweden under Trump, is expected in Copenhagen in October.
DR reports that the three unnamed Americans allegedly sought to sway Greenland’s stance toward Denmark through what it terms “infiltration and influence activities.”
One individual, who reportedly appeared alongside Trump in public, is accused of compiling lists of both supporters and critics of the U.S. president. He is also said to have promoted narratives that cast Denmark negatively in U.S. media, including controversies involving Greenlandic children and past disputes.
