Following victories for Wales and Northern Ireland, Scotland begins their journey to secure a spot in next year’s World Cup, set to take place across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, with an away match against Denmark in Copenhagen. In a group that also includes Greece and Belarus, Scotland, Denmark, and Greece are likely to view anything less than a playoff place as a major disappointment.
Based on FIFA rankings, Denmark leads at 21st, followed by Greece (39th), Scotland (47th), and Belarus (97th). While Belarus appears to be the weakest in the group, they have a history of causing trouble for higher-ranked teams, including Scotland. Currently unable to host matches at home due to their association with the conflict in Ukraine, they play Greece in Athens in the group’s other fixture.
Alongside tracking Scotland’s performance, attention will also be on other UEFA qualifiers. Sweden’s opening Group B match in Ljubljana against Slovenia will be one to watch, with Alexander Isak possibly making his first appearance of the season. The forward, recently transferred to Liverpool, may not start but could feature as a substitute.
Other notable matches include Switzerland vs. Kosovo, which has a history of tense encounters, while Ukraine faces France in Wroclaw, Poland, as part of their campaign. Italy, having missed the last two World Cups, seeks to avoid further setbacks with a home match against Estonia. Meanwhile, Croatia is expected to defeat the Faroe Islands convincingly.
