Heavy Rains Trigger Floods and Landslides in Himachal Pradesh
The mountainous region of Himachal Pradesh in India is facing severe disruption following intense rainfall, which has led to flash floods and landslides, leaving many people unaccounted for.
According to a report by the state government, 23 flash floods, 16 landslides, and 19 abrupt downpours caused extensive damage over the weekend. Numerous homes, bridges, roads, and power lines were destroyed. Authorities have issued warnings for additional landslides, with forecasts predicting more rain in the coming days.
Himachal Pradesh, situated in the Himalayan range, has seen increasing climate-related challenges in recent years, with monsoon rains becoming unpredictable and more extreme. In 2023, catastrophic floods in northern India devastated critical infrastructure in the state and claimed over 300 lives.
Many towns and cities in Himachal Pradesh are built on steep slopes, making them vulnerable to landslides. Hundreds of houses, often constructed on unstable ground, have collapsed or been buried under debris.
The state’s disaster management officials reported that 78 fatalities have occurred this year due to monsoon-related incidents, including floods, electrocution, and road accidents. Search operations are underway for those still missing, but difficult terrain and damaged roads have slowed progress. Several areas remain cut off, without electricity or clean water.
Mandi, a town in Himachal Pradesh, was among the worst-hit locations. A local representative, actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, faced criticism after stating she had "no funds for disaster relief" and held "no cabinet position."
Experts warn that climate change is heightening flood risks in India, with heavier rainfall, rising sea levels, and more extreme weather events. The monsoon season, from June to September, accounts for nearly 80% of the country’s annual rainfall.
Earlier in June, severe flooding in Assam and Mizoram claimed multiple lives, while Mumbai experienced widespread disruptions after early monsoon rains submerged parts of the city, halting normal life for its 24 million residents.
