One of Team GB's prominent riders, Charlotte Dujardin, has been suspended from participating in the Paris Olympics after a video surfaced depicting her reportedly mistreating an animal during training.
The 39-year-old rider, who previously secured six Olympic accolades at various games, faces a six-month hiatus following allegations of disciplining the horse's legs in a coaching session several years ago.
Withdrawing from the competition on Tuesday afternoon prior to an announcement by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), Dujardin stated her regret over her actions, admitting no excuse could justify them and expressing deep remorse.
This development has caused shock among Team GB officials just three days before the start of the Games.
The FEI confirmed the suspension after receiving a video on Monday, which they deemed to show Dujardin acting contrary to horse welfare principles during an alleged training session at a private stable. The individual in question later admitted to being depicted in the footage and acknowledged their wrongdoing.
The governing body has expressed its commitment to equine welfare, with robust rules already established to address such behavior. FEI President Ingmar De Vos voiced disappointment at this situation but emphasized that it was vital for them to deal decisively with any incidents of abuse in order to protect the wellberaning of animals and maintain the integrity of their sport.
