Emma Raducanu Advances to Third Round at National Bank Open in Montreal
Emma Raducanu maintained her recent strong performances, securing a place in the third round of the National Bank Open in Montreal with a straight-sets victory over Peyton Stearns.
The world No. 33 proved too consistent for the American 32nd seed, using key breaks in each set to seal a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Raducanu, who arrived in Montreal after a solid semi-final run at last week's Citi Open, had won her two previous encounters against Stearns. An early break in the first set set the tone for her dominance.
She secured another break in a hard-fought eighth game to take the opening set. However, her rhythm wavered in the second, with double faults allowing Stearns to claim a break.
The British No. 1 responded by winning four consecutive games, including a decisive break to level at 4-4, before closing out the match.
“Peyton is a tough opponent—we’ve had long matches before,” Raducanu said afterward. “I’m pleased with how I handled things today. There were moments in the second set where I lost focus, but I’m glad I pulled through against a strong player. It’s great to keep playing here."
She added, “The support means a lot—I noticed the Union Jack at key points. Since I was born in Canada, doing well here is special. I’m just happy to move forward.”
Raducanu will meet either Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova or New Zealand’s Lulu Sun in the next round.
