Coordinated networks of accounts were observed to significantly influence social media discussions surrounding European parliament elections across France, Germany, and Italy. This phenomenon was brought to light by Dutch researchers who meticulously analyzed disinformation trends on various social platforms in these nations.
Following an exhaustive examination involving over 2.3 million posts from more than 468,000 accounts across Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands, a consultancy identified approximately 50,000 profiles that actively propagated disinformation. The researchers found a notable surge in activity preceding election day, with these account followers rapidly expanding their numbers.
In particular, the French dataset comprised over 127,000 posts mentioning Éric Zemmour, the founder of Reconquête, a far-right political party. Nearly one-fifth of these were attributed to disinformation sources. Similarly, around 10% of discussions involving Alternative für Deutschland in Germany featured content from disinformation accounts.
The Dutch researchers did not detect organized disinformation efforts within their nation or Italy; however, Italian posts appeared primarily focused on migration and vaccination debates rather than the elections themselves. The consultancy identified these coordinated networks as having substantial influence over public discourse by extensively sharing content across platforms.
Furrances of concern were found among densely interconnected accounts that seemed to be operated by humans, based on analysis by Trollrensics co-founder Richard Odekerken. In Germany, a social account named 888_leila posted in Russian and exhibited connections with multiple profiles under the name Leila Ruth 888 originating from various global locations.
Trollrensics specializes in scrutinizing disinformation networks that often involve troll accounts aiming to sway public opinion systematically. The 'EU Elections Investigation' report highlighted the operation’s extensive scale and suggested it required considerable human resources and time commitment for its execution.
Many accounts were established after 1 January, achieving substantial follower counts quickly. A significant majority of these accounts reciprocally followed other profiles, an indication often associated with coordinated disinformation campaigns. The report emphasized the technique's effectiveness in establishing perceived legitimacy by showcasing a large number of supporters.
Dutch MEP Thijs Reuten commented on potential links between these accounts and election results, acknowledging that their primary aim was to sow doubt and discredit western authorities—a narrative often pushed by external influences. Co-founder Robert van der Noordaa noted the effectiveness of mass propagation from homogenous groups advocating specific candidates as a more persuasive tactic than conventional marketing approaches like advertising campaigns.
