Paris-Milan High-Speed Rail Service Halted After Severe Storms
Rail services between France and Italy have been suspended for “at least several days” following severe storms earlier this week, according to French rail operator SNCF, as reported by AFP.
The storms, which struck southeastern France on Monday, have prompted a cleanup effort while SNCF inspects the tracks on the Paris-Milan high-speed line for potential damage that could extend the disruption.
Italy Introduces Measures to Address Extreme Heat
Several regions in Italy, including Lazio and Lombardy, have implemented new guidelines to safeguard workers from record-breaking temperatures. Outdoor work at construction sites and quarries must pause during peak heat hours, local media reports. Other areas, such as Emilia Romagna, are expected to introduce similar measures this week.
In Genoa, extended free travel hours for seniors encourage them to make trips earlier in the day before temperatures climb, as noted by *Corriere della Sera*. Meanwhile, Bologna officials reported a 7% rise in emergency calls amid the heatwave.
Heatwave Continues Across Europe
Much of Europe remains under extreme weather alerts as the first major heatwave of the season persists, renewing concerns over public health, environmental risks, and the effects of climate change.
Paris (38°C) has activated its highest-level red alert, with the Eiffel Tower’s summit closed as a safety precaution. Prime Minister François Bayrou—who is also facing a no-confidence vote today—has postponed meetings to oversee the situation.
Other cities bracing for unusually high temperatures include Zaragoza (39°C), Rome (37°C), Madrid (37°C), Athens (37°C), Brussels (36°C), Frankfurt am Main (36°C), Tirana (35°C), and London (33°C). While some regions will experience the peak of the heatwave today, others face the first of two forecasted scorching days.
