"European heatwave persists, spreading eastward – latest updates"

France Records Second-Hottest June Since 1900, Official Confirms

France experienced its second-warmest June since records started in 1900, according to the country’s ecological transition ministry, as reported by AFP.

“June 2025 ranks as the second-hottest June since 1900, surpassed only by June 2003,” said Agnès Pannier-Runacher, France’s minister for ecological transition.

Spain and Portugal also registered their highest June temperatures on record.

Morning Briefing: Adapting to Extreme Heat

As a severe heatwave spreads across Europe—with Paris, Rome, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, and Warsaw all expecting temperatures above 30°C—questions arise over how societies should adjust to these conditions.

The World Meteorological Organization, the UN’s climate agency, warned yesterday that extreme heatwaves will become more frequent and intense, requiring long-term adaptation.

The issue has also entered political discussions, as some segments of the public question the financial burden of climate policies.

Teresa Ribera, the EU’s lead official on environmental transition, stated that reluctance among political leaders is slowing efforts to address climate challenges, even as record-breaking heat affects the continent.

Despite clear signs of climate change, Ribera noted that some political groups deny its existence or argue that necessary measures are too costly.

Italy has taken steps by imposing restrictions on outdoor labor, but such measures alone do not resolve the broader challenges. What further actions are needed?
