British heavyweight Fabio Wardley secured the most significant victory of his career with a stunning upset against Joseph Parker, positioning himself for a world title opportunity against Oleksandr Usyk. In an intense battle at the O2 Arena, Wardley demonstrated remarkable resilience, absorbing several heavy blows from Parker before the referee, Howard Foster, halted the contest in a dramatic 11th round.
The WBO had initially instructed Parker, a seasoned contender, to face Usyk, the reigning heavyweight champion, in July. However, the New Zealander risked his mandatory challenger status by taking on Wardley, who was still competing in amateur bouts when Parker held the world title in 2016.
Parker had claimed he would be on a "different level," a statement that seemed true for much of the fight. Wardley appeared to let chances slip in the second and 10th rounds, where decisive moments could have shifted the bout in his favor.
But after weathering Parker's attacks, Wardley surged back in the 11th, landing a powerful right hand that staggered his opponent. A flurry of follow-up punches forced the stoppage, extending Wardley's remarkable rise in the sport.
Wardley, who wore shorts bearing Ipswich Town Football Club's initials, had previously delivered a 10th-round knockout against Justin Huni in June despite trailing on the judges' scorecards. Now, just four months later, he finds himself within reach of a fight with Usyk. The Ukrainian champion was not present, but ringside observers included notable figures from the heavyweight division.
Before the main event, a December bout between veterans Derek Chisora and Dillian Whyte was announced. Wardley and Parker finally met in the ring after Parker received a brief acknowledgment from Tyson Fury.
The opening round favored Parker, who landed sharp punches, leaving Wardley with minor damage. The British fighter responded aggressively in the second, targeting Parker’s body before staggering him with a right hand. Despite the momentum shift, Parker recovered as the fight progressed.
Parker dominated the middle rounds, landing heavy shots, yet Wardley endured, surviving a tough ninth round before mounting a comeback in the 10th. Though Parker controlled much of the later action, Wardley ultimately seized his moment in the 11th, securing a decisive victory.
