The British & Irish Lions have only just begun their tour of Australia, but the crucial Test series is drawing near. Key decisions on team selection will soon be required, and performances in the upcoming matches will be critical for several players. Here, we examine the five major selection questions.
Dan Sheehan has quickly established himself as the Lions’ probable starting hooker. His recent leadership role in Perth, taking over from tour captain Maro Itoje, highlights the trust Andy Farrell has in him. Ronan Kelleher and Luke Cowan-Dickie are likely competing for the reserve position; a strong lineout performance from Kelleher against the Reds could strengthen his case.
At loose-head prop, Andrew Porter faces a significant challenge if he aims to displace Ellis Genge. Genge impressed against Argentina, providing the kind of powerful ball-carrying the Lions need. Meanwhile, tight-head remains a slight uncertainty. Tadhg Furlong’s quality is unquestionable, but consistency will be key. Finlay Bealham capitalized on his chance against Argentina, but Will Stuart could still push for a Test starting spot with a strong performance this week.
The lock selection is an intriguing dilemma. Itoje, as captain, is a guaranteed starter, but Joe McCarthy’s standout performance in Perth makes him hard to overlook—especially with Australia expected to start strong physically. Some players rise to the occasion on Lions tours, and McCarthy, complete with his distinctive hairstyle, is clearly thriving.
If both Itoje and McCarthy start, the Lions may need a third lineout option at No. 6, likely Tadhg Beirne. However, Beirne has yet to reach his usual high standards in the first two matches. Will Farrell trust him to find form, or might he opt for McCarthy and shift Beirne back to the second row?
This also leaves a slim chance for Ollie Chessum, whose physicality could earn him consideration—particularly if Farrell favors a 6-2 bench split.
The blindside debate becomes more complex with the inclusion of Tom Curry, a relentless presence that any coach would value. Australia’s Rob Valetini poses a major threat, and the Lions must contain him. If Beirne starts at six, Curry could slot in at openside or No. 8—or even begin from the bench. However, Josh van der Flier’s return to form makes the openside position highly competitive.
