Ferrari Confirms Fred Vasseur as Team Principal With New Multi-Year Deal
Ferrari has put an end to speculation about the future of team principal Fred Vasseur by finalizing a new, multi-year agreement with him. The announcement dispels rumors that the team was exploring a potential move for Christian Horner.
Vasseur, who played a key role in securing Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, had faced scrutiny amid the team’s struggles during what was anticipated to be a competitive season. Ferrari has yet to secure a race win this year.
Appointed in 2023 as Mattia Binotto’s successor, Vasseur has led a restructuring effort within the team, which has not claimed a drivers’ championship since 2007 or a constructors’ title since 2008. Last season, Ferrari earned five victories and finished second in the constructors’ standings, raising expectations for Hamilton’s debut season with the team.
However, the anticipated progress has not been achieved, and Ferrari continues to lag behind a dominant McLaren.
Speculation had grown, particularly in Italian media, over Vasseur’s position, given his contract’s impending expiration and reports of Ferrari’s interest in Horner, who left Red Bull three weeks ago. Before this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari confirmed its decision to retain Vasseur.
“I appreciate the continued confidence Ferrari has in me. This renewal is more than an acknowledgment—it represents our commitment to push forward, stay focused, and achieve results,” said Vasseur. “In the past two and a half years, we’ve established a strong base. Now, we must build on it with consistency and determination. We understand what is required, and everyone here is dedicated to meeting those goals and progressing together.”
Ferrari did not disclose the exact length of the contract, only describing it as “multi-year” while reiterating its belief in Vasseur’s ability to guide the team to success.
“Fred joined Ferrari at the start of 2023, bringing deep motorsport expertise and a track record of nurturing talent and constructing competitive teams across racing categories,” the team stated. “Since his arrival, he has established a solid framework with the goal of returning Ferrari to the forefront of Formula One.”
Currently, the team sits second in the constructors’ standings but trails McLaren by 268 points. Hamilton won a sprint race in China this season but stands sixth in the championship after 13 races, marking his longest streak without a podium finish in a single season.
