Mokie, the Arabian horse recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living horse—previously owned by actor Burt Reynolds—has passed away shortly after earning the title, according to a recent announcement.
The horse was 40 years old and had spent his later years in Florida as a therapy animal for individuals facing difficult periods in their lives. Horses typically live between 25 and 30 years, making Mokie’s age equivalent to approximately 115 in human years.
Arica Dzama, Mokie’s owner at the time of his death from Jupiter, Florida, shared that the horse taught her "how to love a horse that doesn’t provide the usual companionship found in riding." She added that Mokie showed her "what a horse can accomplish just by being themselves."
Born on Reynolds’s farm in February 1985 under the name Mohawk, Mokie was initially bred as the actor’s personal horse. He remained there until 1992, when he was sold. Dzama began caring for him temporarily when his second owner was away, later taking him in permanently when that owner relocated.
Though Mokie had traveled extensively across the U.S. with his previous owner, under Dzama’s care, he lived a quieter life focused on therapy work. "Mokie was already older when he came to me," she recalled. "He loved eating, being groomed, and giving affection. Every day with him was meaningful."
Guinness confirmed Mokie’s age as 40 years and 83 days on May 14. He died on June 3. Dzama expressed sadness that he did not live to see his official recognition but took pride in his accomplishment. "This acknowledgment of his long life is something I’ll always value," she said. "I hope to honor his memory. He was truly one of a kind."
