A wildfire rapidly spreads through Jasper, situated within Canada's largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. The blaze causes significant damage and compels thousands of local residents and tourists to vacate their homes.
Officials from Jasper National Park confirmed that on Wednesday evening, the fire penetrated the southern perimeter of the town. Emergency crews are engaged in combatting several structural fires while also attempting to safeguard essential infrastructure. The incident has led to considerable property losses according to officials.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that he had approved Alberta's request for federal assistance, and his government is supplying military support as well as evacuation aid. He also mentioned the co-ordination of firefighting efforts and airlift services on social media platform X.
"Alberta, we stand with you," Trudeau posted.
Firefighters who lack self-contained breathing apparatus were ordered to leave the area for Hinton while those battling structural fires remained in place. The Parks Canada representative James Eastham informed reporters outside Jasper that smoke was enveloping the town, and there has been destruction of property. However, specific details such as the number of affected properties were not yet confirmed.
Parks Canada is making every effort to salvage as many structures as possible while protecting key infrastructure like wastewater treatment plants, communication facilities, pipelines, etc. Meanwhile, the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge's social media post indicated that flames had reached their property but did not disclose any details about damage.
A few hours before, numerous first responders were evacuated from Jasper National Park for safety reasons. The wildfires impacting Jasper are coming from both the north and south with over 5,000 residents and around 20,000 tourists escaping to Hinton in a matter of hours when fires intensified on Monday night.
Alberta's Premier Danielle Smith expressed her sorrow over the situation. In 2023, an unprecedented number of wildfires have caused more than half a million people across Canada to leave their homes due to smoke-filled skies and health advisories in several cities. The northern fire was spotted near Jasper earlier on Wednesday while the southern blaze had been detected closer to 8km away from the town, but park representative Katie Ellsworth mentioned that strong winds were causing rapid changes in fire perimeters.
Efforts such as helicopter bucketing and using heavy equipment failed due to safety concerns. The anticipated rain overnight did not alleviate the situation significantly. Park representative James Eastham emphasized that relocating first responders outside of Jasper was a difficult decision made in light of the fire's aggressive behavior, prioritizing their safety.
In 1984, Jasper and other parks in the Canadian Rockies were recognized as world heritage sites due to their breathtaking mountain landscapes by the United Nations. The mass evacuation led to a total withdrawal of residents from the town on Wednesday, although many remain displaced at the Grand Prairie evacuation center.
In light of extreme heat conditions that have already forced thousands from other communities in Alberta, approximately 177 wildfires were burning across the province as of Thursday evening.
Leanne Maeva Joyeuse and her family shared their experience after traveling for about 20 hours to reach an evacuation center following Jasper's mandatory vacate order. They expressed relief but also exhaustion, stating that they were eagerly awaiting the moment when they could return home, unsure of how long it would take.
