Technical Issue Causes Flight Delays Across UK Airports
Delays have impacted flights in and around London after a technical issue arose at the UK’s air traffic control center in Swanwick. NATS, responsible for managing national air traffic, implemented flight restrictions as a precaution while engineers worked to resolve the problem.
A statement issued by NATS confirmed:
“Safety remains our top priority, and measures were taken to manage traffic flow while resolving the issue. Our team is working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible, and we are coordinating with airlines to reduce delays.”
The extent of the disruptions is still being assessed, but the timing—during a peak travel season—could lead to further scheduling challenges.
Gatwick Airport confirmed knock-on effects for departing flights nationwide, while London City Airport noted that arrivals and departures could face delays or cancellations.
This is not the first time such an issue has occurred. In 2023, a system failure resulted in widespread delays affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers. Another outage in 2014 at the same facility led to numerous flight cancellations and prolonged hold-ups.
NATS later announced that the affected system had been restored and efforts were underway to resume normal operations.
“Engineers have resolved the technical problem, and we are returning to standard procedures,” the agency stated. “We regret any inconvenience caused to travellers.”
