Sir Geoffrey Boycott has been admitted to the hospital following complications in his post-operative recovery from throat surgery, according to his family's statement.
The 83-year-old had previously undergone successful surgery for a cancerous tumor on July, but now faces setbacks with the development of pneumonia. The illness has rendered him unable to eat or drink independently, necessitating his return to hospital care where he is receiving oxygen and nutritional support through a feeding tube.
Following the initial surgery in 2002, Boycott faced another diagnosis of cancer. As one of England's most celebrated cricketers, he scored an impressive 8,114 runs in Test matches over 108 appearances for his national team, including 22 centuries with a personal average of 47.72. In addition to his on-field achievements, Boycott spent nearly two decades providing commentary and analysis as part of the BBC's Test Match Special program after ending his playing career in 1986.
