"Former South Korean leader Yoon Suk Yeol jailed again for martial law attempt"

Former South Korean Leader Yoon Suk Yeol Jailed Again Amid Ongoing Probe

Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol was returned to custody on Thursday after a court approved prosecutors' request to detain him as part of an investigation into his push for martial law last year.

The Seoul central district court's ruling supports the special counsel’s inquiry into accusations that Yoon's actions in December amounted to obstructing justice and misusing authority.

In a statement, the court explained that the warrant was issued due to concerns that Yoon might try to conceal evidence.

Yoon, a conservative figure, is already accused of rebellion over his martial law order, an offense that could result in life imprisonment or capital punishment.

Following the decision, the former president was taken back to the Seoul detention center, located approximately 20km south of the capital. He had previously spent 52 days in custody but was released four months ago due to procedural reasons.

He was removed from office in April after the constitutional court upheld his impeachment by parliament over the failed martial law attempt, an event that stunned the nation and led to prolonged political unrest.

The special prosecution began its investigation after Lee Jae Myung assumed office in June and has since been examining further accusations against Yoon.

The probe is expected to advance swiftly, including scrutiny of whether Yoon deliberately heightened tensions with North Korea in a way that harmed national interests.

Yoon appeared at Wednesday's hearing in a dark navy suit and red tie but declined to respond to reporters. His legal team has rejected the allegations, labeling the detention request an unjustified step in a rushed investigation.

Local outlets reported that over 1,000 supporters gathered near the courthouse in 35C heat, holding signs and chanting Yoon’s name.

Prosecutors reportedly argued in their request that Yoon could flee if not detained.
