An advocate from France Unbowed party has ignited controversy by expressing that participation of Israeli athletes at the upcoming Paris Olympics is unwelcome.
During an event supporting Palestininas efforts, Thomas Portes argued against hosting the Olympic Games in Paris and declared Israel's representatives unacceptable to participate: "It’s time for action now." He urged citizens to organize protests before the games commence.
Representing Jewish French institutions (CRIF), Yonathan Arfi condemned Portes' remarks as harmful, citing history and calling on politicians to denounce such statements publicly.
Portes suggested that French diplomats should pressure the International Olympic Committee for exclusion of Israeli symbols during the Games. This sparked further disapproval from various political figures including Paris deputy mayors and government officials who criticized Portes' stance as divisive.
A Socialist MP countered, emphasizing inclusivity and sportsmanship beyond nationalities or backgrounds. Meanwhile, an upcoming match between Israel's football team and Mali was announced to be part of the Olympics schedule in Paris. The Israeli president committed to attend significant commemorative events linked to past international tragedies during the Games.
