An 18-year-old French individual who reportedly identified with the male-dominated "incel" ideology has been taken into custody and is under formal inquiry for allegedly preparing assaults aimed at women, according to officials from France’s national counter-terrorism agency (PNAT).
The detention, carried out on Wednesday, marked PNAT’s first case tied to the "incel" (involuntary celibate) subculture, an online community of men who feel driven to commit acts of violence against women due to perceived romantic rejection.
PNAT stated on Tuesday that legal proceedings had been initiated "against an 18-year-old individual who claims association with the incel movement," noting that the suspect was under scrutiny for reportedly "aligning with criminal elements to plan one or more violent acts against individuals."
A person familiar with the case supported media reports that the arrest occurred near an educational facility in the Saint-Étienne area of central France. Authorities reportedly found the individual in possession of two knives and suspected he intended to target women.
Beliefs rooted in animosity and suspicion toward women have increasingly drawn public attention globally in recent years, facilitated by digital platforms, including social media.
