Local authorities are currently searching for three individuals suspected in connection to an arson incident that resulted in seven fatalities at a residential building located within the low-income area of Les Moulins, situated on the western side of Nice. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal disclosed these details while addressing reporters at the scene.
The devastating fire claimed lives from varying age groups including three young children and an adolescent who attempted escape by leaping out a window. The incident took place in an occupied apartment complex with residents of Comoran descent, as stated by regional prefect Hugues Moutouh.
The blaze erupted around midnight on Thursday when ten individuals were present inside the building situated on its seventh floor. Neighbours managed to erect mattresses in front of the structure attempting to minimize potential injuries from falls. The arrival of firefighters at approximately 2:30am local time was timely, potentially averting a greater number of casualties according to France's interior minister, Gérald Darmanin.
Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli has initiated an investigation into potential arson-related deaths and expressed hope for "a strong response" from authorities post-investigation completion. French President Emmanuel Macron has extended his condolences to the bereaved families, posting on social media that he is with them during this trying time.
The fire reportedly originated in a second-floor flat and rapidly spread through the stairwells of higher floors as per authorities' statements. Amongst those rescued from the scene were three individuals who sustained severe injuries after leaping out windows. The swift actions of the firefighting team involved aerial ladder rescues, saving numerous residents on different levels of the building.
Soibrata and several other occupants expressed dissatisfaction over what they perceived as a delayed response from the emergency services despite local officials stating that it took approximately 10 minutes for them to arrive at the scene. Neighbors intervened by using water-soaked objects like parasols on their balconies in an effort to hinder further damage caused by potential falling debris.
Following this tragic incident, a crisis unit is being set up under the guidance of Nice's Mayor, Christian Estrosi, aimed at assisting those affected by the fire-related destruction.
