French President Emmanuel Macron and His Wife Sue Commentator Candace Owens for Defamation
French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, have filed a defamation lawsuit against commentator Candace Owens in Delaware, targeting her and her affiliated businesses. The lawsuit alleges that Owens has repeatedly made false and damaging statements about the couple to amplify her public profile.
In early 2024, Owens claimed she would “stake [her] entire professional reputation” on the assertion that Brigitte Macron was born male. Since then, she has reinforced these claims and expanded upon them, including through an eight-part podcast titled *Becoming Brigitte*, as stated in the legal filing.
The Macrons reportedly requested retractions for what they describe as “demonstrably false” statements, but Owens allegedly dismissed these appeals, instead using them to fuel further falsehoods among her followers.
Among the disputed claims are allegations that Brigitte Macron is transgender and assumed another person’s identity, that the Macrons are blood relatives engaging in incest, that Emmanuel Macron’s presidency was orchestrated by a CIA-led mind-control program, and that both are involved in forgery and fraud to conceal these supposed secrets.
Faced with Owens’ refusal to retract the claims, the Macrons stated, “We ultimately concluded that referring the matter to a court was the only remaining option… Her campaign of defamation was clearly intended to harass us and our families while boosting her own notoriety. We offered her every chance to withdraw these statements, but she persisted. We hope this lawsuit will finally set the record straight.”
The lawsuit argues that Owens' accusations have caused severe harm, exposing the couple to worldwide ridicule and forcing them to allocate significant resources to counter the falsehoods. “Every time the Macrons step outside, they are confronted by the knowledge that countless individuals have heard—and many believe—these malicious lies. It is invasive, dehumanizing, and profoundly unfair,” the filing states.
Per reports, the Macrons are prepared to testify in Delaware and have retained Clare Locke, a prominent law firm known for handling high-profile defamation cases.
Before filing the lawsuit, the couple sent Owens three separate retraction notices containing evidence refuting her claims. Instead of complying, Owens purportedly used these attempts to escalate derogatory remarks and spread additional falsehoods.
