On the final day of a hastily organized election, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal called for an end to any form of violence or intimidation in society during his social media post. The Interior Ministry reported numerous politicians, activists, and candidates who have faced physical assaults throughout their campaigning efforts.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin disclosed that over 30 arrests had been made across the country following these violent acts. While it was still too early to determine a common profile for those perpetrating these attacks, they ranged from individuals reacting spontaneously to politically motivated activists on both ends of the political spectrum.
Approximately 30,000 police officers are expected to maintain law and order in France post-election results, with a significant number stationed around Paris due to anticipated protests. The Paris Bar Council has requested an investigation into far-right provocations against legal professionals.
The National Rally (RN) party asserted its potential for forming a government despite polling suggesting it may not reach the required majority. With various leftwing alliances and centrist parties proposing to withdraw candidates, there remains uncertainty surrounding how a potential deadlock could be resolved in parliament prior to France's upcoming Olympic hosting duties.
Prime Minister Attal campaigned for calm amidst these tense circumstances while leaving the door open for his government’s possible continuation if an impasse persists following Sunday's elections. The move towards a snap election was described as a strategic attempt by President Macron to curb extremist influences and re-establish parliamentary order, despite facing significant political challenges in doing so.
