Recently, a group known as "oil kills" has taken action by attaching themselves to runways and disrupting flights throughout European summer travel hubs. Demonstrators from various cities including Oslo, Barcelona, Cologne-Bonn, Vienna, Zurich, Geneva, Norway, Finland, and Spain have voiced their demands for a complete halt on fossil fuel consumption by 2030 in high-emission nations.
On Wednesday morning at the Cologne-Bonn airport in Germany, climate advocates from Last Generation disrupted operations after cutting barriers to attach themselves to the runway. The incident led to a total of 31 flight cancellations and six rerouted flights according to the airport's statement.
Writings from Austria show activists delaying departures by not taking their seats prior to takeoff, while in Switzerland they blocked roads that connect to Zürich and Geneva airports. In a separate incident at Heathrow in the UK, ten members of Just Stop Oil were arrested on suspicion related to potential disruptions.
One Swiss retiree named Rita Straub stated her intentions for civil resistance as an effort to provoke change amidst growing climate concerns. “I am deeply troubled by how our world is evolving and the choices we continue to make,” she expressed, emphasizing her disapproval of ongoing fossil fuel exploitation and its impacts on future generations.
The activists argue that affluent countries should bear a larger burden in ending the use of fossil fuels due to their significant contribution to pollution and capacity for change. Lili Gomez, associated with Last Generation, remarked, "What used to be commonplace can no longer continue."
Governments in several nations have implemented stricter measures against airport protests, seeking to impose more severe consequences on the activists involved. Meanwhile, the Dutch branch of Extinction Rebellion plans further demonstrations across multiple countries this Saturday at various international airports.
