IDF Gunfire Kills 30 Palestinians Awaiting Aid, Gaza Officials Report, as US Envoy Prepares for Israel Visit
Gaza health authorities reported that at least 30 Palestinians were killed and 300 wounded by Israeli gunfire on Wednesday while waiting for humanitarian aid in northern Gaza.
Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for Gaza’s civil defence, confirmed the casualties to media outlets. The Israeli military stated it was unaware of any fatalities in the incident near Gaza City.
Meanwhile, the United Nations warned that recent pauses in hostilities have failed to alleviate the worsening hunger crisis. The UN’s humanitarian office noted that despite temporary breaks in fighting, people continue to suffer from starvation and malnutrition, with many injured or killed while attempting to access aid.
Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, said the facility received 35 bodies from the incident, which occurred roughly three kilometres southwest of an aid entry point.
As ceasefire discussions remain stalled, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to visit Israel on Thursday. Witkoff had previously participated in indirect talks between Israel and Hamas before negotiations collapsed last week.
A US official stated that Witkoff would meet with Israeli officials to discuss potential steps moving forward in Gaza.
The development follows Canada’s announcement that it intends to recognise a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly, joining France and the UK.
