The first African-born member of Germany's Bundestag has announced he will not seek reelection in upcoming federal elections. This decision comes amidst revelations that he and his team received hate mail, including racist abuse and threats.
Karamba Diaby, 62, celebrated for breaking racial barriers when elected to the Bundestag in 2013, expressed a desire to prioritize family time over political duties while also creating opportunities for newer generations of politicians.
However, this announcement follows shortly after Diaby disclosed instances of hate mail his team had encountered since their election. He acknowledged the distressing nature of these messages but stated they were not the primary factor in his decision to retire from politics. Notwithsupdated by threats, it is still believed that these incidents influenced his choice.
Diaby has pointed out an escalating hostile atmosphere within parliament and society since 2017 when a far-right party gained entry into the Bundestag. He described this shift as marked by aggressive rhetoric from certain colleagues, which he believes contributes to increased violence outside of political circles.
Born in Senegal and raised in East Germany, Diaby holds a PhD in chemistry. His election alongside another MP was seen as groundbreaking for racial representation in the Bundestag. Despite facing racism throughout his tenure, he remains committed to the Social Democratic Party (SPD), promising ongoing support during the lead-up to next year's elections. He expressed eagerness for personal and family time while maintaining an active role within the party.
