Giavellotto may not be the top contender in training, but few current races can match Marco Botti's five-year-old in terms of strength and physique, as demonstrated at the July Festival on Thursday with his win in the Group Two Princess Of Wales’s Stakes.
The race commenced at Newmarket Heath with competitors still far apart from one another at the six-furlong pole, yet it was quickly apparent that Hamish was struggling while Giavellotto and Oisin Murphy showed promise of victory. Ultimately, Murphy made his move just over a furlong out, allowing Giavellotto to swiftly secure a lead of three and a quarter lengths over Arrest at the finish line.
The win serves as an excellent example of patience with Thoroughbred horses, particularly given Giavellotto's background as a handicapper during his three-year-old career before earning third place in the 2022 St Leger race.
His next opportunity for a Group One victory is at the Irish St Leger on September 15th. Botti mentioned, "The mile and a half distance was never really an issue, as Giavellotto is performing exceptionally well this year." The horse traveited smoothly into the race, followed by Murphy's observation that Giavellotto picked up quickly and ran strongly to the finish line.
Separately, Whistlejacket claimed victory in last summer's Goodwood Cup after Quickthorn caused a stir among the field, while Ancient Wisdom showcased success in the Group Two July Stakes. The latter will likely participate in another race prior to his anticipated run in the St Leger at Doncaster, with Charlie Appleby noting that it is essential to consider the horse's optimal ground conditions for a successful performance.
On a different note, A Lilac Rolla (3:35) emerged as an attractive alternative over Mr Monaco and Fiery Lucy in their respective races at Newmarket and York. Unequal Love demonstrated strong form with her victory at Wokingham race last time round.
