Hayden Springer, ranked 236 in the world, achieved an impressive score of 59 during the first round at the John Deere Classic held in Illinois. This marks his second sub-60 performance within two weeks and puts him at a strong start with 12 under par.
This remarkable feat followed closely after Cameron Young's groundbreishi1e earlier this month, highlighting Springer's swift ascent on the PGA Tour. Despite earning his card through qualifying school in December, he displayed exceptional skill during his round. Notably, a strong beginning with an eagle and six birdies at the front nine set new records for TPC Deere Run course, being its lowest score since 2000.
However, despite this promising start, Springer encountered challenges on subsequent holes, ending up with five pars in succession after not capitalizing on a scoring opportunity on the par-five 10th hole. Yet, he recovered admirably to secure his place in history through an impressive eagle at the par-five 17th and a decisive putt from just 55 yards near the conclusion of the round.
Expressing his surprise and delight, Springer shared, "I'm feeling good. I'm at a loss for words at being able to do that – one of the rare things in golf." He reflected on past performances where he had recorded scores as high as 61.
Before this extraordinary day, Springer experienced a difficult period with six consecutive missed cuts in tournaments leading up to his joint-tenth place finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. This outstanding achievement has provided him with renewed motivation and gratitude for his success on the course.
