The United States Department of Justice has detained two high-ranking officials from Mexico's notorious Sinaloa gang, including one of its original founders, on allegations related to the illicit production and distribution of fentanyl. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced these charges against leaders Ismael Zambada Garcia, also known as "El Mayo," a co-founder of the organization, and Joaquin Guzman.
Garland highlighted on Thursday that fentanyl represents one of the most severe health crises facing the nation, vowing to continue holding accountable those responsible for this epidemic within our communities. The arrests were carried out in El Paso, Texas, contributing to a broader effort against Sinaloa cartel figures.
The actions represent part of an extensive campaign initiated last year by the Department of Justice which resulted in charges leveled against over twenty members of the Sinaloa gang, including relatives of infamous criminal Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. The accusations included providing essential components used to synthesize fentanyl.
The Sinaloa cartel has been involved in extensive cross-border operations from its hubs near the Arizona border since its establishment by Zambada and Guzman. Charged with conspiracy related to drug manufacturing and trafficking activities, Zambada also faces additional felony charges.
Recent indictments have accused a Chinese criminal network of assisting in laundering millions for the Sinaloa cartel's profits from narcotics sales through alleged partnership with Mexican associates, utilizing China's demand for US currency to mask illegal transactions. Reuters contributed this news update based on previous reporting.
