Viktor Orbán, Hungary's conservative Prime Minister, has recently sparked controversy at this week's Nato Summit in Washington. The issue lies with his decision to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping en route to the US, a move that many see as challenging to international peace efforts.
The Hungarian Prime Minister plans to make an unexpected stop at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday for a meeting with US President Donald Trump. This decision comes despite not requesting a bilateral meeting during the Nato Summit, which was held in response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine since February 2022.
Orbán had initially avoided commenting directly about his meetings with Putin and Xi Jinping at the summit but later expressed his views through a letter sent on Thursday evening. In this letter, he claimed that "time is not in favor of Ukraine" due to Russian military actions and emphasized the need for direct dialogue between all parties involved in finding peaceful solutions.
The Hungarian leader has also criticized Nato's response to the conflict, stating that it should be viewed as an isolation strategy against Russia. He argued that diplomatic channels were closed due to ongoing US elections and a lack of proposals for peace from Washington.
Orbán is not new to controversy, with his visit to Moscow in May raising concerns among Western nations. His actions have led to criticism within the EU itself during Nato Summit discussions about Hungary's role as the current holder of its presidency. Some diplomats proposed reconsidering whether this responsibility should be transferred from Budapest due to Orbán's unconventional approach towards international relations.
