Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, will be visiting Mar-a-Lago on Thursday to engage in discussions with President Donald Trump, as reported by two individuals familiar with the planned meeting.
Orbán has raised concerns amongst his NATO partners after he met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping during a trip that led him to an upcoming summit in Washington DC. Additionally, Orbán is alleged to have been negotiating independently for potential peace efforts without the knowledge or involvement of either the Biden administration or other EU nations.
Authorities confirmed that Orban's jet arrived at Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday for a future summit and was still present there as of 10:30am eastern time Thursday morning.
There have been no disclosures from Orbán regarding the specifics of his talks with Putin or Xi, nor has he requested an individual meeting with President Biden according to three sources involved in summit preparations. This action is viewed as concerning by some EU nations since Hungary currently presides over the European Council.
Orbán's support for Trump during his re-election campaign has been vocalized through statements made by both Orbán and his foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, who suggested that a successful Trump presidency may lead to improved relationships between Hungary and the US.
Throughout the remainder of this year, as the European Council's presidential role is maintained, it has been noted that there could be an opportunity for Orbán to establish connections within Washington D.C., particularly if Trump becomes the next President-elect.
A private discussion will take place today at noon Eastern Time between members of the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs and a conservative US think tank, Heritage Foundation, with a focus on security matters in Europe and the US.
