Ibiza Hotel Cancels Events After Two British Tourists Die
A hotel and music venue in Ibiza has called off several upcoming performances following the deaths of two British men on its property within two weeks.
Gary Kelly, a 19-year-old player for the Dundee Stars ice hockey team, died at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel on Monday. His team honored him as a "highly skilled and engaging young player" with a "promising future."
This follows the death of another Scottish visitor, 26-year-old Evan Thomson, who died after falling at the same hotel in July.
The hotel, which doubles as an open-air concert space, has halted its scheduled performances, citing “the gravity of the circumstances and out of consideration for everyone affected.”
A statement read: “We are profoundly saddened by these tragic events. Our focus right now is on supporting those impacted and their families while cooperating fully with the authorities.”
Performances by rapper Dizzee Rascal and drum’n’bass group Rudimental, originally set for this week and late July, have been canceled. The hotel did not confirm the total number of affected events.
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are assisting the family of a British national who died in Spain and are in touch with local officials.”
The Dundee Stars released a statement saying: “We extend our deepest sympathies to Gary’s loved ones. Our entire organization is devastated by this loss. He was a gifted and well-liked player whose absence will be felt across the hockey community and beyond.”
Other UK hockey teams also expressed condolences. The Glasgow Clan wrote: “This is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with all those affected.”
The Whitley Warriors, where Kelly briefly played, noted: “Though his time with us was short, Gary was a positive presence among his teammates.”
Thomson’s mother shared a tribute online, writing: “I am devastated to share that my son Evan died in an accident while on holiday in Ibiza. Our family is shattered.”
