A Japanese man was apprehended at Hilo International Airport in Hawaii following a report by TSA officials who noticed two objects resembling explosive devices within his bag during security screening procedures. The items were later determined to be harmless, according to the local police department.
The incident prompted authorities to evacuate the terminal area and suspend airport operations as they awaited a bomb squad's assessment of the situation. Upon inspection, it was concluded that the objects in question were inert grenades, leading to the arrest of 41-year-old Akito Fukushima from Kanazawa, Japan on charges related to terroristic threat.
Akito Fukushima has been taken into custody at the East Hawaii detention center and is under investigation by police officers, as reported by Police Capt Brian Prudencio of the local television station Khon2. After a brief suspension, airport operations were resumed approximately an hour later.
TSA representative Lorie Dankers highlighted the importance of travelers being aware of their luggage's contents to prevent similar incidents from occurring at airports. The TSA maintains strict regulations against carrying any form of explosives, including replicas such as hand grenades in either checked or carry-on baggage.
