A local resident was apprehended by officials attempting to transport over 100 live snakes into mainland China by concealing them within their clothing, as reported by a government agency.
The individual in question had been crossing from semi-autonomous Hong Kong and aimed to enter Shenzhen, according to the country's customs department.
Upon inspection at the border checkpoint, authorities discovered several canvas bags tucked into the man's pants. These pockets were sealed with adhesive tape.
Each bag was found to house various snakes of different sizes and colors when opened by officials. A total of 104 reptiles, including some species native to China like milk and corn snakes, were confiscated from the man.
The incident is highlighted in a video footage showing border personnel inspecting plastic bags with wriggling red, pink, and white serpents inside.
China has been recognized as one of the leading nations affected by wildlife trafficking on an international scale. Nevertheless, efforts to combat this illegal trade have intensified in recent times.
The nation's regulations strictly prohibit individuals from bringing non-native animals across its borders without prior authorization.
As a response to violations of such laws, the authorities stated that appropriate legal actions would be taken against those found in breach of the regulations. However, no specific consequences for the individual involved were disclosed at this time.
