A soldier in Ireland's defence forces faces dismissal after a case involving assault on a woman. Cathal Crotty, 22, is expected to be formally discharged from the military following conviction for an attack on Natasha O'Brien, who became a symbol of gender-based violence handling in legal systems.
Protests arose across cities such as Cork, Dublin, Galway and Limerick when Crotty received a suspended sentence after brutally assaulting O'Brien due to her efforts against his homophobic remarks. The court case has led lawmakers to recognize the need for legal reforms in dealing with gender-based violence cases.
Crotty will be discharged and required to return all military equipment upon leaving Sarsfield barracks in Limerick after proceedings initiated by the defence forces concluded with his dismissal. The case has brought attention to the actions of serving soldiers, with 68 currently convicted or facing charges for criminal offences within three years.
The appeal against Crotty's suspended sentence is still pending before the director of public prosecutions argues that it was unduly lenient. In an earlier claim during his arrest, Crotty suggested O'Brien had provoked the violence but later admitted to unprovoked aggression upon seeing CCTV footage. The assault left O'Brien feeling as if she were "a punching bag", with her last thought before losing consciousness being, "he's not stopping, I'm going to die".
