Cycling Team Adjusts Jersey Branding Amid Protests at Vuelta a España
The Israel-Premier Tech cycling squad has opted to use abbreviated branding on riders' jerseys for the remainder of the Vuelta a España following disruptions caused by demonstrators at the conclusion of stage 11.
Wednesday’s stage saw no official winner after organizers recorded race times at the three-kilometer mark due to difficulties in managing a large group of protesters waving Palestinian flags near the finish line in Bilbao.
Earlier in the race, the team had been halted on the road by demonstrators displaying Palestinian flags during the team time trial in Figueres.
“To ensure the safety of our riders and the peloton, given recent incidents at the Vuelta, the team has provided riders with uniforms featuring abbreviated branding for the rest of the event,” a team statement explained.
“Though our official name remains unchanged, the updated jerseys follow the same branding approach used on our vehicles and other team apparel.”
Before stage 11, the Professional Cyclists’ Association (CPA) had urged improved security at the race following multiple protests that raised concerns over participant safety, with Israel-Premier Tech frequently singled out.
After Wednesday’s disruption, the team expressed its intention to continue racing while acknowledging the right to peaceful protest, provided it does not endanger competitors.
This report will be updated following the conclusion of Saturday’s stage.
