An Israeli anti-settlement watchdog reported that Israel has approved its largest seizure of land in the West Bank since 1993, increasing tensions with Gaza. The appropriation involves approximately 5 square miles (nearly 12.7 sq km) in the Jordan Valley and is seen by some as a threat to future Palestinian statehood due to its location near crucial corridors.
Since capturing West Bank territories from Jordan during the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel has been attempting to solidify control over these areas through various measures including declaring large portions as "state lands," which restricts Palestinian ownership. The recent land acquisition follows previous seizures in March and February, with critics claiming that this move hinders the peace process.
The decision was publicized after its late-month approval but has been met with international concern from sources like UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric who emphasizes a negotiated two-state solution as the desired path forward.
According to leaked recordings, Benjamin Netanyahu and Bezalel Smotrich are committed to this land seizure project, which they consider critical for Israel's strategic interests. The move comes amid increased violence in the region, including home demolitions by the Israeli military and civilian actions that have displaced Palestinians from their homes.
