"Jack Draper steps up as Britain's new tennis star at Wimbledon"

Jack Draper is ready to take on the role of Britain’s top tennis contender as he begins his Wimbledon journey with high expectations.

Draper will take on Argentina’s Sebastian Baez in his first-round match on Tuesday, marking a significant moment for the 23-year-old following a breakthrough year. Just a few seasons ago, he sought guidance from Andy Murray and other elite British players to unlock his potential. Now, as the fourth seed, he has become a mentor himself, with younger players approaching him for advice on their own careers.

“It’s nice when people reach out,” Draper said. “Within British tennis, people know what I’ve been through—the injuries, the setbacks—and that I’m always focused on improving. I’m constantly looking for ways to get better.”

His growing influence was evident last year when rising star Hannah Klugman arranged a meeting with him through her coach, Ben Haran. Klugman, who recently reached the French Open girls’ final, credits Draper’s advice as a turning point in her development. She will make her Grand Slam debut on Monday against 29th seed Leylah Fernandez.

“I told her that everyone’s on their own path,” Draper said. “Even top players face challenges. The difference is how they handle them. Tennis isn’t easy—every day brings pressure. My message was not to fear doubt or struggle but to learn from it.”

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz opens play on Centre Court against Italy’s Fabio Fognini on Monday. Other notable matches include world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka facing Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine and Emma Raducanu taking on British wildcard Mimi Xu.

Despite a tough draw and increased scrutiny, Draper is eager to prove himself. “Wimbledon is a great chance to show what I can do on court and the mentality I bring,” he said.
